A big hotel in a small town, named for a Spanish explorer, with a guest list including Abe Lincoln, U.S. Grant, Stephen Douglas, etc. Opened on April 9, 1855. One of these days I'll have to stop in at their tavern and soak in the history.

High Point Park
High Point Park, Scales Mound, IL. 4/11/09.
Scales Mound is located just off of Stage Coach Trail which runs into the back door of Galena.
About a mile from Charles Mound which is the highest point in Illinois at 1235 feet.
So what is this place? My guess is that these are a pair of the highest beach volleyball courts in the state of Illinois. But of course I could be wrong.

Argyle St. Chinese New Year
Chinatown New Year's Parade, January 31, 2009 12:14 pm Saturday.
It's funny reading people arguing on internet forums about what day the Chicago Chinese New Year parade is. The thing is, there are two Chinese New year parades in Chicago, one held on Saturday on Argyle and the other down Wentworth on Sunday. Argyle is more fun, more in the street, more firecrackers. The parade on Wentworth is more of a crowd with everyone forced to stay off the street. The gentleman in the costume was featured in both parades.
